Jane Solomon


Born in 1963, Solomon graduated with a diploma in Graphic Design from Michaelis School of Fine Art, UCT in 1985.

Solomon’s work includes the design of art-making processes, learning materials and textiles (Fabricnation) and the facilitation of workshops where creativity and skills training is used as a starting point for transformation, income generation and self empowerment.

As a facilitator she has been involved in curating a number of community based exhibitions including: Isiza sase Crossroads, the Granary, Cape Town (1999); Women’s exhibition, Philani Flagship, ART Gallery Paarl (2000); International Aids day exhibition, Khayalitsha (2002); Long Life bodymaps exhibition, SANG (2003).

Solomon lives and works in Woodstock, Cape Town.

Jann Cheifitz

Cheifitz holds a Fine Arts Degree from the University of Cape Town (1985). Between 1986 and 1989 she worked at the Community Arts Project, Cape Town as a Media Workshop Facilitator, teaching T-shirt production and design to community activists. As a member of the Visual Artist Group she also produced campaign media for struggle events. From 1989 to 1993 Cheifitz worked in Cape Town and London with fellow exhibitor Jane Solomon, producing T-shirts and textiles based on printing and painting techniques they had developed together.

Her work has also been featured on several international group shows and Biennials including Biennale De Havana, Havana, Cuba (1994); Aachen, Germany (1994); O_utside/Inside_, Johannesburg Biennale(1995); 600 Seoul international Art Festival: Humanism and Technology, Seoul, Korea (1995); Art for Peace Now, 50th Anniversary of the United Nations, Zurich, Switzerland(l 995); Special OK, Berlin (1996).

In 2000 she founded Lucky Fish, a New York based Apparel Company with worldwide distribution of which she is president and designer. in that capacity, she has undertaken special projects, most recently ‘Its beautiful here…’ a co-curated show with Jamie Rosenthal at the Lost and Found Gallery in Hollywood, Los Angeles, contextualizing Lucky Fish products in a South African contemporary crafts environment. She has also designed product for the Converse group’s social investment contribution ‘Project Red’ and continues to collaborate as a designer with fellow exhibitor Jane Solomon for FabricNation Textiles in South Africa.

Cheifitz currently lives and works in New York.
